On the eve of his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his longevity in North London is inextricably linked to winning major honors.

The Journey So Far: The Arteta Era

The Spanish coach took over on December 20th, 2019 and managed to steer the team to an FA Cup victory not long after. Yet, that first major trophy is still his lone major honor following the departure of Unai Emery.

“I can,” the manager said in response to a query about staying beyond 2027. “But it’s about today. And many things have to happen in the next few months as well to deserve that opportunity.”

Saturday night brings the anniversary with a game facing Everton, the very same club Arsenal met just after his hiring was confirmed.

The Current Landscape

As chasing Manchester City playing against West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal risk losing the summit in the Premier League before their own match begins. This situation arises even with Arteta overseeing a squad that has suffered in excess of one hundred injury setbacks since the start of last season.

He currently has 18 months remaining on the extension he agreed to in 2024, however, he knows that he must deliver sooner rather than later.

Earning the Right

The manager expanded, highlighting the ongoing need to prove his worth. “My belief is that a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you talk here, how you enter the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

He added, praising the unwavering support from the club's ownership, yet identifying the players' commitment as the key factor. “At the end, the key individuals are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, willingness to improve and give the maximum to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The team approaches the upcoming game coping with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a strain that is anticipated to keep him out for a few weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Even with the injury crisis and the intense pressure, Arteta is confident the club's “focus and dialogue” are profoundly distinct from when he began his reign.

The manager referenced the record-breaking achievements as proof they are close. “Examine the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the level we are at.”

He finished by saying, “This is a standard that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our ambition is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
